Sevenoaks Rugby Football Club – historical notes

Founded 1925

  • October 1925 first match, against Lensbury (won)

  • First home pitch – Hitchen Hatch Lane

  • First changing rooms - Sennocke Hotel, Tub’s Hill, subsequently renamed the Farmers

  • Soon moved into Knole Paddock; council granted the club the use of the rugby pitch in perpetuity

  • 1930s - golden period for the club in playing terms; players in London Division, Kent, England trials

  • In 1947 the club arranged with the Vine Cricket Club the use of its pavilion for changing and post-match hospitality

  • 1952 - official opening of first club house on a piece of land between Knole Paddock and Raleys Field

  • 1958/59 season - U21 side was established followed a year or two later by an U18 side

  • From the mid-sixties the club was regularly fielding six sides, as it continues to do today

  • 1966 - first tour to Pontoise – twinned with Sevenoaks

Recent history

  • 1978/79 season - mini rugby started; existing clubhouse opened

  • 1984/85 - first club coach appointed; floodlights installed

  • 1987 - first ever League fixture beat Old Shootershillians 4-3 at home (Kent 1)

  • 1988 - relegated from Kent 1 to Kent

  • 1989 - champions of Kent 2 with 100% record played 10 won 10

  • 1990 - Kent County Sevens runners up

  • 1995 - beat Old Elthamians 134-13 and to clinch Kent 1 title with another perfect record played 12 won 12. Also won the Kent 2nd XV Championship with a won 11 lost 1 record

  • 1997 - beat Canterbury 41-3 to clinch promotion from London 3 South East, and beat Canterbury 28-24 to win the Kent Cup for the first (and only) time. Beat Old Brockleians 163-0 to record our highest ever win. At the time this was the highest win recorded in the RFU Championships.

  • 1999 - lost to Dudley Kingswinford 8-10 in quarter final of the RFU Intermediate Cup. Finished 2nd in London 2 South, our highest ever final League position. Lost to Westcombe Park in Kent Cup Final. Beat Blackheath 1st XV 41-40 in 3rd Round of the Tetley National KO Cup. Lost to Thurrock 23-24 in Round 4

  • 2000 - 75th anniversary Dinner in the Rose Room at Twickenham

  • 2000 - Dave Flatman becomes first former player to win full England cap

  • 2002 - Chris Crang and Malcolm McCulloch first players to make 100 League appearances

  • 2003 - Relegated to London 3 South East. Sevenoaks RFC member Robert Horner elected President of the RFU

  • 2004 - Andy Titterrell becomes second former player to win full England cap. Damian Manning made his 100th League appearance during the season

  • 2004 - hosted Kent Cup final

  • 2005 - Andy Titterrell wins selection for British Lions tour

  • 2005 - won promotion back to London 2 South. Mark Ridout made 100th League appearance

  • 2006 - hosted Kent Cup final

  • 2007 - Simon Gandon made 100th League appearance

  • 2008 - relegated from London 2 South. George Roffey made his 100th League appearance

  • 2010 - U17s become first side at SRFC and in Kent to win a National title by winning the National Plate at Northampton Saints

  • 2013 - U17s London & SE Champions, 1st XV - Kent Plate Winners and Bournemouth 7's Winners.

  • 2014 - U17s London & SE Champions and National Cup Runners-up

  • 2015 - U17s London & SE Champions and National Cup Runners-up. Senior team wins Maxinutrition 10s at Twickenham, Junior section breaks Guinness World Record for the biggest ever rugby tour, as around 1,000 players, parents and coaches take Barnstaple RFC West Coast Festival by storm.

  • 2016 - 1st XV finish second and are promoted from London 2 South to London 1 South after beating London Cornish RFC in a play-off match

  • 2019 - 1st, 2nd and 3rd XV’s win their leagues, with the 1st XV promoted to National 3 for the first time in the Club’s history
